Mike Leigh Info

Mike Leigh was born February 20th 1943 and is an English writer and director of film and theatre. He studied at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts). He started as a theatre director and playwright in the mid 60's and in the 70's and 80's he focused more on theatre work and making films for BBC Television, many of which were characterized by a gritty 'kitchen sink realism' style.

Mike Leigh's work is very original and particular because he focuses on using improvisation which builds up the characters, plots and storyline for his pieces of work. He gets the actors to focus on people in their lives to take inspiration from them, even if its just someone they've brushed past in the streets, he gets them to take inspiration from them. This is his technique for creating new characters which bit by bit he slowly builds the characters and then introduces the actors to each other but in character. Once he's got all the characters/actors together, he builds the story lines/plot around them to create his final piece.

Mike begins exploring his characters early into his process. Each actor must choose an individual known to them and build a character
